How Long Before You Need to Re-String a Tennis Racquet if…?

you've been playing recreational tennis 2-3 times a week, with a decent /Wilson/$30 racquet for about 3 months? Maybe I should just buy new racquet?

Go with a new racquet because it costs 20 bucks to get it re strung anyways.

BIg 5 is a dumb place to buy a raquet. no self respecting player would buy a raquet from there. Considering it takes 20 bucks to string a raquet, i would rather buy a new one. Check out tennis warehouse. You ned to restring ur raquet when ur strings pop obviously and also if you feel as if you dont have enough tension(pop) in your strings.

When the strings feel, look soft it depends on how much you play/use the racket

I always take the vibe dampener off and hit the strings on my palm if it goes “ping” they are still good, if it goes “thud” get it restrung. Another rule of thumb is get it restrung as many times a year as you play in a week – you play 2 times a week get it restrung every 6 months.
But in your case you should probably upgrade to a better racquet. Go to your local tennis shop and talk to the owner or intelligent employee and see what they might recommend. Give them a price range you want to stay with if you don’t want to spend too much.
If you don’t have a tennis shop in your area (not a sporting goods store, but a tennis specific shop) then look around on sites like tennis.com and tenniswarehouse.com . There will be information there to help you choose a new racquet. Believe it or not some play very different from others. Tennis Warehouse has great prices and they have a user review section so you can read reviews. They also have a good demo program if you want to try a few racquets first before purchasing.

To be truthful, you should search for a racquet that’s slightly more expensive. Try Big 5, they always have sales for tennis racquets that are usually around $250-$400 going for around $40-$80. Stringing typically costs $20 if you get it done at the shop, or $10-$50 if you buy the strings from the store and get it strung there. If your racquet retailed $30, then I suggest you just get a new one and constantly restring that one.
You will need to restring every time your strings start to feel loose, or if you pop them (of course). Usually you will need to restring once or twice a year if you’re only playing for fun, and more if you play competitively or if you’re a hard hitter.
*edit: I was only SUGGESTING a place they can get relatively good racquets. I assume that if they are only playing for recreational purposes, that they won’t need to order really good racquets from Tennis Warehouse or tennis shops, I got my N1 code from tennis warehouse, but from what I see most people DO go to Big 5 considering that it is just down the street from school.

You should truly just buy a new racket. If you want new strings, well good strings, it could cost you $30 dollers. You might as well spend a little more than $30 ddollers and get your self a good racquet.

Big 5? Wow, thats like the worse place to get a good racket. They say the price of a racket is like 250-450$ and they’re actually around 50$ in reality. They lower it to make it look like their having a discount and people actually believe them and buy it.

You dont have to buy a new tennis racquet if youre merely only just restringing it and playing recre tennis. If you want to get serious or to play competitively, do get a new racquet then.
The rule of thumb is to restring the racquet as many times (a year) as you play it in a week- ie. if you play tennis twice a week, string it twice a year. However, since youre only playing recre tennis which isnt heavy on your racquet I’d suggest twice a year.
