Don’t Invite A Burglar Into Your House

How to secure your house while you are away!

Most of us are concerned about the safety of our home while we are away traveling. As the baby boomers take up this new interest of seeing the world, while traveling extensively for longer periods of time this problem is only going to grow.

When you are away your home is sitting there like an open invitation to any burglar who would like to drop in. Travelers have been know to return to a totally emptied house, where the burglars had all the time in the world to do a great job.

So, what is the solution, you may ask?

Actually in order to find a solution we need to identify the problem or problems. The burglary itself is only a symptom that a problem exists.

There are two main issues:

1. The "Invitation" and
2. The "Easy Access"

This article will address the first issue.

The "invitation" is simply when you leave your house looking unoccupied and unattended. Here are a few things you can do to change that:

• Cancel the newspaper
• Tell the neighbors
• Have someone collect your mail, including the junk mail.
• Ask someone to leave their car in your driveway ever so often
• Make sure your lawn is mowed in the summer
• Have the snow removed in the winter. Also off the car.
• Remove decorations after Christmas time
• Install timers on a couple of lamps in the house
• Have a timer turn you TV on so the flickering is noticeable
• Leave a radio on a talk station to simulate faint voices

These are just a few suggested precautions, which will make your house less inviting. Surely you can come up with a few ideas yourself.

According to the Police 97% of burglaries take place when homes are unoccupied. The idea is therefore to make the house look like there is someone home.
