image3 Book Review: The Guernsey Literary and Potato Peel Pie Society This is possibly the most delightful book I’ve read in years.  Set in London, it spans the time period from Jan. 8th, 1946 to September 17th 1946, with a summer setting in Guernsey.

Through a series of letters from author, to publisher, to best friend, to the author’s research project which leads her to Guernsey, there is a wonderful story that unravels during these months.    Guernsey was under German occupation for five years and the tales revealed are heartfelt, horrific and heroic.  Author Shaffer creates such loving, caring, interesting, creative, proud and humorous characters, all against the backdrop of the war.  You want the letters to go forever.  You want the people to grow old and receive daily updates on their lives, their loves, and  the books they have chosen to read.

Well written is an understatement.   I felt the same way about “Cold Sassy Tree”, I wanted more from Olive Ann Burns, but sadly she died, as did Mary Ann Shaffer.   Amazing writers, creating such memorable fiction, all you want to say to them both is “thank you so very much, truly a gift”.

Authors: Mary Ann Shaffer and Annie Barrows
